History

The History of Show-Safe

Show-Safe was founded by passionate advocates, experienced handlers, and leaders within the canine exhibition community. These individuals recognized the need for a proactive and inclusive approach to ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants—exhibitors, handlers, spectators, and their canine companions.

The idea for Show-Safe emerged from heartfelt conversations about the issue of abuse and misconduct within the dog show world. It became clear that the community needed more than reactive measures; it needed education, advocacy, and robust systems to prevent misconduct and support for victims and survivors. Show-Safe was built on a foundation of Integrity, Respect, Safety, Advocacy, and Collaboration, principles that guide its every action and initiative.

From the outset, we set out to recruit a stellar lineup of subject matter experts, professionals, and executives from all facets of the dog show community. These members of the Board of Directors are highly respected in their professional lives and have selflessly and passionately worked to make Show-Safe a success. Each brought a unique set of skills essential to building a sustainable and impactful organization. Additionally, a carefully crafted, actionable strategic plan was developed to guide Show-Safe’s initiatives and ensure its mission is realized. In just under a year, we achieved the following:

  • April 2024: Show-Safe is legally incorporated in the State of Kentucky
  • June 2024: Show-Safe applies for non-profit status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code,
  • October 2024: First full time Executive Director is hired
  • November 2024: Show Safe receives its formal 501(c)(3) charitable status.
  • December 2024: Show-Safe publicly launches at the AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin in Orlando.

The organization’s mission expanded to include creating awareness campaigns, distributing educational materials, and offering direct services to victims of abuse. By fostering a culture of accountability and respect, Show-Safe aims to ensure that the sport remains a place of joy and passion for all.

Addressing Misconduct Through Education and Support

One of Show-Safe’s key focuses is education. By promoting certifications such as Darkness to Light, the organization empowers the community to RECOGNIZE, RESPOND, and RESTORE. Show-Safe has also received significant support from judges, breeders, mentors, and handlers who have completed these certifications, signaling a growing commitment to fostering safety within the sport.

To tailor its approach to the unique needs of the dog show community, Show-Safe is designing comprehensive seminars. Collaborating with mental health professionals and experienced individuals from the sport, this course will address the specific dynamics of abuse and grooming within the AKC community. Scheduled for release in December 2024, it aims to provide clubs with the tools necessary to safeguard their members.

Responding to Survivors

Show-Safe’s vision extends beyond prevention. Planned services include:

  • Access to legal assistance
  • Trauma counseling
  • Mental health care
  • Emergency safe housing for individuals in abusive situations

These efforts underscore Show-Safe’s commitment to addressing the immediate and long-term needs of survivors while building a safer environment for everyone.

Awareness and Advocacy

Show-Safe recognizes the challenges of discussing sensitive topics like abuse, as highlighted by concerns from community members about the potential misuse of educational tools. The organization addresses these worries transparently, emphasizing that while it cannot eliminate all dangers, it can equip the community to recognize and disrupt patterns of misconduct. The organization believes that through a united approach, the community can create a culture where abuse is less likely to occur.

Nurturing Future Leaders

The Show-Safe Leadership Development Program will empower dog show stakeholders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to foster safe, respectful, and inclusive environments within the dog exhibition community. This dynamic program will equip participants with tools to recognize, address, and prevent misconduct while promoting ethical leadership practices. Through a combination of workshops, mentorship opportunities, and real-world scenarios, participants will enhance their abilities to advocate for positive change, uphold Show-Safe’s core values, and serve as role models for others. By investing in the growth of compassionate and informed leaders, Show-Safe will strengthen its mission of creating a culture of integrity and safety for all.

Looking Ahead

As Show-Safe grows, it envisions becoming a respected voice within the dog show community. By uniting exhibitors, handlers, breeders, and stakeholders, the organization aims to preserve the joy and camaraderie that make dog shows special.

Through the generosity of donors and supporters, Show-Safe will fund its educational initiatives, leadership development programs, victim support services, and outreach programs. Donations will be tax-deductible allowing early supporters to contribute confidently.

Show-Safe stands as a beacon of hope and safety, proving that with education, advocacy, and community support, a brighter, safer future for all participants is within reach.
