The Immediate Protection Helpline

What to Expect When You Call

We understand that reaching out can be difficult—especially if you’re unsure what to expect. When you call, we’ll listen with compassion and respect your privacy. You won’t be asked to share details of what happened.

Our focus is on helping you identify what you need to feel safe and supported. Here are a few answers to common questions:

Under What Circumstances Should I Call?

Call our helpline any time you or someone you care about needs real-time support to feel safer—but the situation doesn’t rise to the level of an emergency that would require calling 911 (police/medical) or 988 (suicide/mental health crisis).

We’re here to help with any kind of abuse or misconduct, including but not limited to: Elder abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, harassment, domestic violence, grooming, bullying, stalking, exploitation, human trafficking, or neglect of basic needs.

If something is happening that makes you feel unsafe or unsure—even if you’re not sure it “counts”—you can call.

Here are two common examples:

  • Example 1:
You’re traveling to a show with someone, but circumstances change and you no longer feel safe. It’s not an emergency, but you’re unsure what to do next and need support and guidance.
  • Example 2:
Something happens at a show—or involving someone who is currently there—that makes you feel unsafe. You’re not sure about your options or what resources are available, but you need to talk to someone who can help.

Call us.
We’ll listen without judgment and help coordinate the support you want and need to feel safe, which could include things like: finding new lodging or transportation, connecting you with mental health support, arranging meals, or helping you make a police report—whatever is needed for your safety and dignity.

When Is the Helpline Available?

You can call any time—day or night. If we’re unable to answer immediately, please don’t worry. Leave a message with safe contact instructions, and we’ll return your call as soon as possible. You’re also welcome to try calling again later.

Please note: While we’re available 24/7, we are not an emergency service and do not replace 911, law enforcement, or licensed mental health professionals.

Who Will Answer?

Your call will be answered by a trained member of our helpline team consisting of just a handful of SHOW-SAFE staff, board members, or volunteers. Your information will not be shared with even the broader Show-Safe team, and we adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines including the use of  internal code names to protect your privacy. If there is someone specifically at SHOW-SAFE that you do not want to be aware of your call, we will ensure they are never involved regarding your situation.

What Support Is Provided?

We’ll help assess your situation and connect you with the resources you need to support your safety and well-being—on your terms. You remain in control at every step*. Our role is to offer information and options, never pressure or advice. This is your life; we’re simply here to assist in ways that matter to you.

We’ll listen without judgment and help coordinate the support you want, which may include things like:

  • Finding safe lodging or transportation
  • Connecting you with mental health support
  • Helping arrange meals or other basic needs
  • Supporting you in filing a police report or protective order, if you choose

Whatever you need to preserve your safety and dignity, we’re here to help.

*Note: SHOW-SAFE is bound by mandatory reporting to law enforcement and/or child welfare as it relates to child abuse and neglect.
